Bicycle Advocacy
At Brightspoke, we believe the world would be a better place if more people rode bikes more often. Here's why.
Cycling is good for you.
-
Cycling can reduce your risk of cancer, heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and obesity. In fact, one detailed literature survey cites studies showing:
- Cycling reduces the risk of premature death by 40% (Archives of Internal Medicine).
- Cycling reduces the risk of developing cardiovascular disease by 11% (Preventive Medicine).
- Cycling reduces the risk of developing breast cancer by 34% (American Journal of Epidemiology).
Cycling is good for your community.
- Cycling strengthens communities by creating quieter and safer streets, encouraging social interaction and improving neighborhood livability.
- Bike paths increase property values. A survey of 2000 homebuyers ranked a bike trail as the second most important neighborhood amenity "across all regions and demographics". (National Association of Realtors and National Association of Home Builders)
- Cycling generates billions of dollars of economic activity, and those dollars are more likely to stay in the local economy.
- Measured by miles traveled, cycling infrastructure is far cheaper than either public transportation or private cars. One Dutch study found that cycling infrastructure costs $0.02 to $0.03 per kilometer traveled while public transportation costs around $0.40 per passenger kilometer (Netherlands Ministry of Transport).
- Bike lanes are good for business. Patrons arriving by bike shop more often and spend more money than those arriving by car.
Cycling is good for the planet.
- Bikes are zero-emission vehicles powered by a renewable energy source. Compared to the calories available in a gallon of gasoline, bikes deliver the equivalent of more than 800 miles per gallon.
- Cycling is the most energy efficient form of transport currently available: better than driving, taking a bus, taking a train, or even walking.
- Each mile that you bike instead of driving will reduce your carbon dioxide footprint by nearly one pound.
- Bikes are significantly more space efficient than cars, buses or trains both in terms of road space and parking and storage.
If you are as passionate about cycling as we are, please consider contributing your time, energy or resources to one of the dozens of local, national or global organizations working to improve biking infrastructure and advocate for the rights of cyclists.
If you would like to see your organization listed here, or have any additions, corrections or updates for this list, please email us at or use the feedback drawer in the lower right corner.

The streets of our cities and towns are an important part of the livability of our communities. But too many of our streets are designed only for speeding cars, or worse, creeping traffic jams. Now, in communities across the country, a movement is growing to complete the streets. States, cities and towns are asking their planners, engineers and designers to build road networks that are safer, more livable, and welcoming to everyone. Instituting a complete streets policy ensures that transportation planners and engineers consistently design and operate the entire roadway with all users in mind - including bicyclists, public transportation vehicles and riders, and pedestrians of all ages and abilities.
